Information and Communication Studies | Dr Amber Cushing and Dr Susan Leavy</b?
Information and Communication plays a key role in all aspects of life- in business, government, society and the life of the individual. Knowing how to create, manage, share, find and use digital information ins more relevant than ever before. Information and Communication Studies will give students a chance to explore the ways companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Intel, Google and Apple utilise the interplay of people, information, technology and social structures to succeed in today’s digital world. In the session, students will learn about technology development and how to understand what swirls around it, the social, cultural and ethical issues.
Geography| Dr Brad Garrett |
|
Geography is fundamental for understanding the world and is increasingly being used in virtually every field of human endeavour, providing a universal language for understanding, communicating ideas, and providing insights. It’s at the heart of solving global issues such as climate change, inequality, urbanisation, and natural hazards. Geography asks the big questions – Where? How? Why? What if? – and gives you the perspective to answer them with advanced technology and a solid knowledge of the world in which we all live. Students will have the opportunity to hear about some of these technologies by learning about aerial drone photography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Short presentations on each topic will be followed by a Q&A with experts in their fields. It will be a fun and engaging opportunity to explore your world and get to know more about Geography in the digital era.
Archaeology | Conor McDermott
Archaeologists seek to understand the past through the study of the physical remains that survive. This includes investigating monuments, artefacts, human and animal bone as well as how people interacted with the environment. It is a diverse discipline drawing on the social sciences, humanities and sciences ranging from art to geography to DNA. UCD School of Archaeology welcomes students exploring Archaeology as part of a broader education as well as those wishing to become professional archaeologists. The summer school will introduce Archaeology as a subject and a profession.
