Irish, Irish Studies, Irish Folklore & Celtic Civilisation Summer School

Thursday June 6th, 9.00am-4.00pm

Fáilte! At this session we will take you on a whistle stop tour of Scoil na Gaeilge, an Léinn Cheiltigh agus an Bhéaloidis UCD, for a taste of our four  subjects, Celtic Civilisation, Irish Folklore and Ethnology, Nua-Ghaeilge, Irish Studies.

What happens on the day?

During the UCD Irish, Irish Studies, Irish Folklore & Celtic Civilisation Summer School, you will attend sample lectures from leading experts connected with the programmes, participate in interactive workshops, take a campus tours while also receiving information on the wide ranging career opportunities available to graduates.

Who can register?

The Summer School is for students who are going into 6th year or Year 13 (A Level) in September 2024.

What does it cost?

The UCD Irish, Irish Studies, Irish Folklore & Celtic Civilisation Summer School costs €35 and includes a sandwich lunch and tea/coffee. A reduced rate of €15 is available for applicants whose families are in receipt of job-seekers or disability payments. If you wish to avail of this discount rate please email summerschool@ucd.ie for a discount code before booking your course.

2.30-3.30pm Who are the Celts? An introduction into Celtic languages and History. – Dr Joe Simpson

Once spoken all over Europe, the Celtic languages are now confined to the Western seaboard of Ireland and Britain. In this lecture we will explore the origins of the Celtic family of languages and the textual, archaeological and genetic evidence for the Celts. We will consider whether a continuous line can be drawn between those ancient people and the modern Celtic nations.
